Around 2,000 people gathered at Brett Park Drummoyne to enjoy a free screening of the hilarious movie, Hairspray. We were entertained by the talented dancers from Belinda's Art of Dance, and watched the movie of the Immersion Trip to Cebu in 2006. Lots of volunteers kept us fed and cared for on the night. A particular thanks to Five Dock Rotary who did a great job running the sausage sizzle, and to the St John's Ambulance team.
This event is supported by the generosity of a number of sponsors including the City of Canada Bay Council, The Cove at Drummoyne Restaurant, Warwick Williams Real Estate, VFX, Big Screen Promotions - Adam Lever, and Merry Time Amusement Hire.
All funds raised on the night will go towards building Rainbow Village in South Vietnam.
Around 130 women and a few brave men came along to our wonderful lunch held at Dede's Restaurant on the waterfront at Abbotsford. MC Margaret Munoz donned her witches gear in honour of our event falling on Halloween. It was a very lively crowd who were clearly having a very good time - and Margaret did a great job of keeping the event running smoothly.
Guest speaker Tania Flood, Project Manager at Habitat for Humanity gave a moving presentation of the dire living conditions of the 90 families we are helping to build houses for in Rach Gia, South Vietnam.
Our organising committee of Jacque Weaver, Donna Kelly, Susan MacGregor and Margaret Munoz created a highly successful day with great decorations, prizes, games and fun! We also thank the staff at Dede's for their great service and delicious food!
A big thank you too, to our major sponsors, Warwick Williams Real Estate and Retreat Spa and Beauty.
Our second Annual Charity Ball was a huge success, with more than 200 people coming along to dance to the fantastic John Field Band and enjoy a delicious three course meal - and of course, to celebrate community! Ann Roberts, Principal of Lucas Gardens School in Five Dock presented an inspiring video tribute to the wonderful students and staff of the school, and our live and silent auctions demonstrated the generosity of our supporters very clearly.
Johnny Took performed his fantastic song, dedicated to Communities for Communities, and MC Joel Betts did a great job of entertaining us and keeping the night on track!
President Lance Brooks presented Certificates of Appreciation to long-term supporters, Warwick Williams Real Estate, PJ Gallagher's Drummyone and the City of Canada Bay Council.
Our Ball Committee did a great job organising this event (as always) and everyone present helped to make the finalisation of Lucas Gardens' special purpose playground closer to reality.
Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors, donors, patrons and supporter for making this night one to remember!
We took the opportunity to reflect on C4C's first five years at our 2008 AGM held at Sydney Rowing Club. Lance delivered an interesting summary of C4C's journey so far (click here to read the extract) and we were fortunate to be joined by around 50 people who have supported us in some form or another. The night was a very happy gathering and once again proved the joy to be found when community comes together!
Foundations of Community Breakfast with Nick Farr-Jones 27.5.08
Sixty people began the day in inspired fashion by coming along to our breakfast with guest speaker, former Wallaby Captain Nick Farr-Jones. This breakfast continues our series being hosted in conjunction with City of Canada Bay Council, featuring people who have drawn on their commercial skills and experience to improve the social and economic circumstances of others. Nick spoke of his experience needing to earn and keep his place in international rugby, his work overseas and locally in the legal realm, and more recently, of the assistance he lends Wesley Mission. A central theme to Nick's talk was the importance of staying focussed on getting the processes right, and that the desired outcomes will generally take care of themselves. We are very grateful to Nick for taking time out of his busy schedule to address our audience, and to all those who came along to support this event.
Golf Day 31.01.2008
Around 140 golfers turned out for our wonderful Golf Day at the picturesque Concord Golf Club. It was hot and humid and we headed back to the Clubhouse for drinks at dusk, just in time to watch a spectacular lightning display to the north. Lots of volunteers helped make the day run smoothly, and we enjoyed a delicious dinner, fun auction and entertainment. All up, we raised around $40,000 which will go towards building safe houses for families currently living on a rubbish tip in South Vietnam.
